Sarah Slean – The Baroness (Warner)
by Bob Mersereau
You can write a love song, or, if you are Sarah Slean, you can live them passionately, let them take over your performance, connect with the most expressive words opening the doors to your emotions. Few artists exist with their songs so intensely. Slean seems to be her material, rather than just its creator. Strictly speaking, these aren't just love songs, but rather heart songs. One of the strongest, Get Home, is a kiss-off to a wanna-be suiter, a would-be adulterer, dismissed with "I don't play the game with liars and cowards like you." Even that is presented on a bed of beauty, as are most numbers here. Piano, strings and voice are the dominant sounds. Best of all is “Notes From The Underground”, with the most gorgeous harmonies you will ever hear and two soulmate writers, of which she sings "we are exiles we two/they don't trust the likes of you and I/they kick our verses aside." Judging by the huge iTunes success The Baroness has already received - debuting at number one in Canada - we're embracing her now, not kicking her aside.
